چکیده

Abstract How can you obtain a satisfactory lexicon for a modern NLP application? Ten years ago the answer you might have received was to wait for the large-scale lexicons soon to be derived from machine-readable dictionaries (MRDs). Five years ago the advice would have proclaimed the virtue of standards; these were currently being agreed, and once that was done, easy-to-use lexical resources complying with them would become available. Today, earlier optimism on these fronts is muted. In this position paper, we explore the history and background and present an alternative methodology for effective lexical engineering in the medium term.

DRAFT Automatic Creation of Lexical Knowledge Bases : New Developments in Computational

Text processing technologies require increasing amounts of information about words and phrases to cope with the massive amounts of textual material available today. Information retrieval search engines provide greater and greater coverage, but do not provide a capability for identifying the specific content that is sought. Greater reliance is placed on natural language processing (NLP) technolo...

The Acquisition of Lexical Knowledge from Combined Machine-Readable Dictionary Sources

This paper is concerned with the question of how to extract lexical knowledge from MachineReadable Dictionaries (MRDs) within a lexical database which integrates a lexicon development environment. Our long te rm objective is the creation of a large lexical knowledge base using semiautomatic techniques to recover syntactic and semantic information from MRDs. In doing so, one finds that reliance ...

LINGUISTIC DESCRIPTION IN DICTIONARIES: SEMANTICS Towards a filtering of the relevant semantic information from MRDs

Machine-readable dictionaries (henceforth MRDs) are a valuable source of lexical data for the automatic construction of lexical knowledge bases (LKBs). However, the transfer of information from one source to the other one often demands a filtering process, since in many cases the original dictionaries contain mistakes, redundancies and granularity irregularities. We claim that this filtering pr...

The ACQUILEX LKB: representation issues in semi-automatic acquisition of large lexicons

We describe the lexical knowledge base system (LKB) which has been designed and implemented as part of the ACQUILEX project 1 to allow the representation of multilinguM syntactic and semantic information extracted from machine readable dictionaries (MRDs), in such a way that it is usable by natural language processing (NLP) systems. The LKB's lexical representation language (LRL) augments typed...
